The Rebel Issue

Issue 37 (Fall 2022)

Risk-takers, rule-breakers, and oft-called trouble-makers – those rebels doing it differently, challenging the status quo: against the current; against the grain. We are running up those roads, we are running up those hills, and we built those cities on Rock and Roll. Often the rebel’s light burns so bright, it doesn’t last the night, a high price paid for walking paths unpaved. Rebels fight the good fight, and as much impact as they can have, they don’t always win. But change is what makes us, and there is no change without challenge, ergo challenge makes us – sometimes breaks us, but that’s those risks we’ve said we take. Rebellion’s inside all of us, it’s in our nature to test boundaries, and so, we’ve created an issue full of rule-breakers, jungle ravers, supervillains, street artists, beat poets, and Sex Pistols. As if all that wickedly delicious dissent wasn’t enough, we have supermodel Joan Smalls lensed by super Greg Swales on the streets of New York. To be the first of anything is a rebel move, but for our cover star, those rebel moves have defined her whole career – the first Latina face of Estée Lauder cosmetics in 2011, and the first person of Puerto Rican descent to front fashion campaigns for Chanel, Balmain, Bottega Veneta, Givenchy, Moschino, Roberto Cavalli, Tom Ford, and many, many more; Joan, the first to walk these paths, so people coming up behind her can run. Let the wild rumpus start!
